Teaching Support: Library tours, induction workshops and skills training

A guide to the support for teaching provided by the Library

Library tours, inductions workshops and information skills training

Library staff are happy to arrange tours of the building, induction workshops and information skills for you and and your students. General Library tours suitable for all students and staff take place each Wednesday during term time. It is necessary to book a place on the regular Wednesday tour. In September tours are offered on regular basis and students can simply turn up for a tour listed on our website. There is no need to book. Our tours website gives more information about what we will cover and details of forthcoming tours. If you wish to arrange a tour for a particular group of students please get in touch with your Faculty Librarian. We are also able to provide tours for university open days and for accreditation visits from professional bodies.

An online tour of the Library is also available.

Faculty Librarians are happy to arrange Library induction workshops and information skills classes for your students. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Using SUPrimo
  • Devising a good search strategy
  • Searching the Library's specialist databases, e.g. SCOPUS, Westlaw, Compendex, Business Source Complete etc.
  • Undertaking a systematic review
  • Finding specialist resources e.g. legal materials, company information, historical newspapers etc
  • Referencing
  • Using EndNote - reference management software

As well as workshops for specific classes Library staff coordinate and deliver the Skills Boost workshops, which are open to all members of the university. These workshops run in both semesters and cover topics including finding reading list materials, copyright, cyber-security and using Google Scholar.
