Verbatim results:
Verbatim results can be found under the Tools option in Google. This can be used when you want to search for the exact words or phrase that you have entered. It can be useful when Google gets the context of your search wrong or where it is suggesting a search that isn't what you mean.
Advanced Search:
Advanced search is accessed through the Settings option in Google. This can be useful when you want to search for specific words or phrases and also gives the option to exclude search terms. The Advanced Search page also offers the option to limit your results by various options, e.g. language, region, date etc.
Phrase search:
Phrase search can be found on the Advanced Search page or by using quotation marks in the simple Google search box, e.g. "Higher education in Scotland".
Exclude search terms
You can exclude search terms either in the Advanced Search page or by using a minus sign in the simple Google search box, e.g. -
Narrow results by:
Language e.g. English or French
Region e.g. UK or USA
Date last updated the date the website was last updated e.g. anytime or up to one week ago
Site or domain e.g. .ac.uk or .edu or .gov.uk
File type e.g. .xls or .pdf
